Q. When do I need a building permit?
A. A permit is required for all new structures in the City of Muskogee. A permit is also required anytime an addition or structural changes are made to an existing building. A permit is not required for painting, floor coverings, or replacement of existing fixtures.

Q. How much is a building permit?
A. The permit fees depend on what kind of project you will be doing.

Q. Do I need a permit for a storage building?
A. Yes and no. If the building is under 200 square feet you will not need a permit unless it will be on a concrete slab. If so you will be required to have a permit. Any storage building over 200 square feet must be on a slab and a permit is required.

Q. Do I need a permit for a storm shelter?
A. Yes, a permit is required for a storm shelter and the fee is $50.00.

Q. Do I need a permit for a pool?
A. If the pool is larger than 12 feet in diameter and is over 2 feet deep, a permit is required.

Q. Do I need a permit to put up a fence?
A. A permit is not required to install a fence, but you must stay within your property lines.

Q. What building codes does the City of Muskogee follow?
A. As of November 1, 2012, the City adopted the following Codes:
  • 2009 International Building Code
  • 2009 International Residential Code
  • 2009 International Property Maintenance Code
  • 2009 International Plumbing Code
  • 2009 International Fuel Gas Code
  • 2009 International Mechanical Code
  • 2011 National Electric Code
Q. Why do I have to get a permit/inspection on my property?
A.For several reasons, two of the most important are: For your personal safety and that of your fanily and friends that you invite to your home. And to protect future home purchasers who also deserve the same assurance of safety.

Q. Can I do my own work?
A. According to our city ordinances, if you own the home and YOU are going to live there, you can do all your own work, including plumbing, electrical and mechanical. If it is rental property or a commercial property, it MUST be done by a city-licensed contractor. We verify home ownership through the tax assessor's office. This is done for the safety of those who will be living in the home, or visiting your place of business.

Q. Can I build up to my property lines?
A. No, there are setbacks required on all four sides of your property.
